From Iran to South Carolina

America is the Land of Opportunity because it gives everyone, citizens and new immigrants alike, equal rights to pursue and fulfill their dreams. Immigrants come to the United States for a better life, but also to realize their dreams of becoming successful movie stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger or very wealthy business owners like Sergey Brin of Google. Mr. Ali Saifi left Iran nearly 40 years ago to start a life in the United States and has been very successful.   “It’s a most interesting country because it allows you to do what you want to do,” he said. What Mr. Saifi wanted to do was open a restaurant. So in 1981 he followed his dream and bought a Subway franchise store in Greenville, South Carolina.  It was the very first Subway fast food store that he had opened in Greenville 30 years ago.  Today he has more than 400 stores and employs nearly 4,000 people. But in fact, he employs more people than that:  non-direct employees including food distributors, truck drivers, packers and other vendors that provide goods and services to the stores and employees. That’s the other part of the American Dream that your dream can help others realize their dreams too.  America is the best place for immigrants to succeed and with the Green Card Lottery program still available, the dream can become a reality for another 55,000 new family immigrants every year!

American Companies Started by Immigrants

The benefits of immigration in the United States are economically clear:  a lot of America’s most profitable companies have been founded by people born outside of the United States or abroad. In fact,  a number of Fortune 500 companies founded by immigrants employed 3.6 million workers around the world in 2011 and were responsible for more than $1.7 trillion in revenues in 2010, according to the Partnership For A New American Economy. Companies founded by  new immigrants in the United States account for a valuable chunk of the American economy, not only in revenue and innovation, but also in job creations.  These companies employ on average 10 American workers.  Economists agree that new immigrants in America are twice as likely to start a business for a number of reasons: If they were willing to take a risk to immigrate to a new country, then they are more likely to be risk-takers and start a new business They want to employ their family.  A business of their own allows them to create a family business They bring new ideas and skills that may be unique in the United States, opening the door to new customers for their products and services Starting a business is easier in the United States than it would be in their own country so they are excited about the opportunity to be business owners Some of the biggest and most successful American companies founded by new immigrants include:  Google, AT&T, Goldman Sachs, ebay, Radio Shack, Big Lots,

U.S. President and Vice President Pro-Immigrant Remarks

Very recently, in a speech in New York to political leaders, Vice President Joe Biden said that Congress has a moral and economic imperative to offer a pathway to citizenship for 11 million immigrants living in America illegally. The Vice President continued to explain that many immigrants “are already Americans,” whether they are illegal or not.  He said immigrants simply want a decent life for themselves and their children, just as his great grandparents did.   It is said that 13% of the American population are new immigrants, while the rest have come to the country as immigrants at one point.  And immigrants have contributed to the United States with hard work, productivity, new ideas, new innovations and diversity that is so desperately needed in a free and competitive economy. This was the second time in a single week that Vice President Biden addressed immigration publicly.  The Obama-Biden administration has been open about immigration reform and their support for new immigrants. Finally, Biden concluded that the majority of Americans in both parties support such a pathway and the granting of full citizenship rights to immigrants who would like to make a better life for themselves in America.

America Is A Nation of Immigrants

Generations of immigrants have helped lay the railroads and build America’s cities, pioneer new industries and fuel America’s Information Age, from Google to the iPhone. Generations of immigrants have helped lay the railroads and build America’s cities, pioneer new industries and fuel America’s Information Age, from Google to the iPhone. President Obama said the following in a Naturalization ceremony held at the White House to immigrants who were about to become American Citizens:   The lesson of these 236 years is clear – immigration makes America stronger.  Immigration makes us more prosperous. And immigration positions America to lead in the 21st century.  And these young men and women are testaments to that. No other nation in the world welcomes so many new arrivals.  No other nation constantly renews itself, refreshes itself with the hopes, and the drive, and the optimism, and the dynamism of each new generation of immigrants. You are all one of the reasons that America is exceptional. You’re one of the reasons why, even after two centuries, America is always young, always looking to the future, always confident that our greatest days are still to come.   The White House celebrates the contributions of all Americans for building the great American nation and its economy, including the generations of immigrants.

President Obama Building The Economy

According to the White House Press, President Obama will not be satisfied until every American who wants work can find a job. That’s why he is working to grow the American economy, way beyond just getting out of the recession, so middle class families feel confident in their futures and their children’s futures. The President is committed to creating jobs, to hunting down misspent tax dollars through the Campaign to Cut Waste, and ultimately providing security for America’s middle class.  Getting back to pre-recession status is not enough; the President wants to fully restore America’s middle class economic status and economic security. America’s small businesses are essential to strengthening the nation’s economy and the President is committed to helping them grow and prosper. America’s economic growth and international competitiveness depend on the people’s ability to innovate.  President Obama believes that America will create the jobs and industries of the future and restore middle class security by doing what America does best – investing in the creativity and imagination of the American people.  “We must out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world to ensure that our nation achieves rapid, sustained and broad-based economic growth.” To restore security to the middle class and create an economy that is built to last – an economy that creates the jobs of the future and makes things the rest of the world buys – America has to out-innovate the competition. But to win that competition, American companies must be able to take their

2013 Growing Industries in the U.S.

The fastest growing industries in the United States are worth following because they impact the rest of the world and are the industries that are hiring and prospering in spite of the global recession.  You might be surprised at some of the businesses on this list, but the numbers and profits make them a favorite among customers and investors:   Hot Sauce and other condiments are rapidly gaining popularity with the American public as the culinary environment becomes more diverse.  In one of our last newsletters, on millionaire immigrants in America, several immigrants dealt with ethnic foods that have crossed the mainstream in American food to make lots of money. Generic medicine and pharmaceutical manufacturing is growing not surprisingly as the American population is aging.  Because many retired Americans do not have a large pension funds or cannot rely on social security benefits, the answer to medicine and healthcare becomes “generic” labels which cost a lot less than established brands.   Pilates & Yoga Studios have been on the rise for years as more and more Americans are interested in both body and mind health benefits.  AlthoughAmerica has a large share of obese population, many are spending more of their income on ways to stay fit and trim, and the biggest trend these days is yoga and pilates classes. Solar Panels manufacturing is part of the “green and sustainable” movement that is sweeping the United States.  These solar panels are placed on the rooftop of homes and commercial building to

President Obama on Immigration

The short answer is YES.   As President Obama said at a citizenship or naturalization ceremony held at the White House last week:   “The lesson of these 236 years is clear – immigration makes America stronger. You’re one of the reasons why, even after two centuries, America is always young, always looking to the future, always confident that our greatest days are still to come.  We celebrate the contributions of all Americans to building our nation and its economy, including the generations of immigrants.”   Indeed immigration fuels the American economy.   Earnings and household incomes for American workers increase because new immigrants purchase local consumer goods.  The Immigration Policy Center estimates that the purchasing power of Latinos and Asians, many of whom are immigrants, alone will reach $1.5 trillion and $775 billion, respectively, by 2015.   Immigrants have a positive impact on the progress of U.S. economy by creating more opportunities for all and especially ones that benefit other minorities living in America.

Immigrants Help Build the U.S.

The President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, and the White House released a very important article about the impact of new immigrants on the American economy and the nation at large. They repeated that America is a nation of immigrants and that it would not be the country it is today without a healthy flow of immigrants who bring their unique skills and customs which ultimately benefit the country.   How do immigrants benefit the U.S. economy? They directly contribute to the economy and social diversity.  How so? Immigrants start many businesses in the U.S.  In fact, close to 20% of small businesses in the U.S. are started and owned by immigrants.  These immigrant-owned businesses create jobs for many American workers employing an estimated 4.7 million people and generating more than $776 billion annually.   Immigrants are also more likely to create their own jobs.  According to the Department of Labor, 7.5% of foreign born immigrants are self-employed or entrepreneurs, which is much higher than native-born American.  That is not surprising.  If immigrants took the risk to immigrate, then they are more likely to take other risks including starting their own business.   New American immigrants are involved in cutting-edge technology and many high-tech companies.   Immigrants are responsible for 25% of public U.S. companies that are backed by venture capital investors. This list includes Google, eBay, Yahoo!, Sun Microsystems, and Intel.  In fact, immigrants represent 33% of all engineers in America, 27% of mathematicians, statisticians, and computer
